Electricity data guide

This emission source captures the emissions resulting from electricity consumed by a company's operations. This could be lights, machinery, computers, or any other electric-powered tools or devices. Every business, from tech startups in coworking spaces to large industrial factories, will have some form of electricity-related emissions. However, companies with energy-intensive operations, such as data centers, will find this to be a major source.

Where to find the data?

Your monthly or yearly electricity bills have details on your consumption. Meter readings or digital usage reports from your electricity provider can also be sources of data about your electricity usage.

A sample electricity bill could look like the following:

Data format template

For each electricity data entry the following information is needed:

  1. Consumption amount

  2. Consumption unit. Only energy units are allowed: kWh (Kilowatt-hour), MWh (Megawatt-hour), MJ (Megajoule), GJ (Gigajoule), TJ (Terajoule)

  3. Emission factor (optional)
